Ingredients

  • 2 c. unsifted self-rising flour
  • 1 c. unsifted whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 (12 oz.) can warm beer
  • 1 Tbsp. honey or 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 c. raisins

Method

  • Grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  • Preheat the oven to moderate (350°).
  • Combine the self-rising flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a large bowl; stir together until well mixed.
  • Add the beer, the honey or the sugar and the raisins; mix until well blended.
  • Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated moderate oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until nicely browned and a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Turn out onto a wire rack to cool.
