Ingredients

  • 2 pound round steak, cut 3/4" thick
  • 2 tbsp. shortening or possibly bacon drippings
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 4 c. grated cabbage
  • 1-1 1/2 c. grated carrots
  • 1 c. uncooked rice
  • 1 med. onion, minced
  • 1 can cream of celery soup
  • 1 c. water, or possibly a little more
  • 2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 c. shredded cheese

Method

  • Cut steak in thin slices 2-3 inches long and brown in shortening.
  • Season meat with salt and pepper; add in 1/2 c. water.
  • Cover and cook slowly for 30 min.
  • Stir in cabbage, carrots, rice and onion.
  • Combine celery soup with 1 c. water and soy sauce.
  • Stir into meat-vegetable mix and place in a 3 qt casserole.
  • Cover tightly and bake at 350 degrees for 45 min.
  • Remove cover, top with cheese and continue baking 15 more min.
  • Makes 10 servings.
