Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. warm water (110~ to 115~)
  • 2 pkg. Red Star special active dry yeast
  • 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. soft shortening
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg

Method

  • Pour warm water in large mixing bowl; add yeast.
  • Let stand a few minutes; stir to dissolve.
  • Add half the flour, sugar, salt, shortening and egg.
  • Start mixer on medium speed and beat until smooth 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
  • Stop mixer.
  • Add rest of flour and stir by hand until flour disappears.
  • Scrape batter down from sides of bowl.
  • Cover bowl with waxed paper and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
