Ingredients

  • 2 c. raisins
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Method

  • Combine raisins and water; cover and simmer 5 minutes.
  • Drain, reserving 1/2 cup liquid.
  • Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and reserved liquid. Add vanilla and beat well.
  • Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture.
  • Stir in raisins and nuts. Drop from teaspoon about
  • 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in moderate oven at 375°
  • about 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Frost while warm if desired.
  • Makes about 6 dozen.
