Ingredients

  • 2 c. peeled, cubed turnips
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1 c. milk
  • 3/4 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 3 Tbsp. melted margarine/butter
  • 1/2 c. soft breadcrumbs
  • paprika

Method

  • Cook turnips in boiling salted water to cover just until tender.
  • Drain and spoon into a greased 1-quart casserole dish. Combine butter and flour in a small saucepan; cook over low heat until bubbly.
  • Gradually add milk; cook, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened.
  • Add cheese, salt and pepper, stirring until cheese melts.
  • Spoon sauce over cooked turnips.
  • Combine melted butter with breadcrumbs, tossing well; sprinkle over casserole. Sprinkle with paprika.
