Ingredients

  • 1 (8 oz.) pkg. dates, chopped
  • 3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 c. butter or oleo
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate bits
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. orange juice
  • 1/4 c. milk or cream
  • 1 c. broken walnuts

Method

  • Combine dates, sugar, water and oleo in large saucepan.
  • Cook over low heat.
  • Stir constantly until dates soften.
  • Remove from heat; stir in chocolate until melted.
  • Beat in eggs.
  • Sift flour with soda and salt.
  • Add to mixture alternately with orange juice, then milk, blending well.
  • Stir in nuts and turn into well-greased 15 x 10-inch pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or just until cake tests done.
  • Cool for 5 minutes, then spread with Orange Glaze. Let cake finish cooling after glazing.
  • While still warm, use a sharp knife to cut into 1 x 1 1/2-inch bars.
  • Remove from pan when cool.
  • Freezes beautifully.
