Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sourdough starter
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 5 to 6 c. unsifted flour

Method

  • Scald milk. Stir in sugar, salt and margarine. Cool to lukewarm. Measure warm water in large bowl. Sprinkle in yeast, then stir until dissolved. Add lukewarm milk mixture, starter and 2 1/2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in additional flour to make stiff dough. Turn onto lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic (about 8 to 10 minutes). Place in greased bowl; turn once to grease top. Cover. Let rise in warm place until doubled. Punch down. Divide in 3 parts. Form each part into smooth round ball or roll out and cut. Place on greased baking sheet. Bake at 400° for 25 minutes. Cool.
