Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 34 cup chopped onion
  • 12 cup chopped sweet pepper
  • 12 cup chopped celery
  • 1 grated carrot (about 3/4 cup)
  • 2 12 cups canned whole tomatoes, undrained (about one and one-quarter 16oz-ounce cans)
  • 16 ounces tomato puree
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 34 teaspoon salt

Method

  • Brown ground beef in big iron skillet, about 4 minutes.
  • Stir in onion, green pepper and celery and fry until brown, about 8 minutes.
  • Add carrot, tomatoes and tomato puree.
  • Stir mixture well and season with pepper and salt.
  • Simmer 45 minutes.
  • Serve over hot buttered corn bread.
