Ingredients

  • 8 C. flour
  • 2 C. raisins
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 2 T. baking powder
  • 2 t. baking soda
  • 1 t. salt
  • 12 oz. chilled butter
  • 2 2/3 C. buttermilk
  • 1 T. vanilla extract

Method

  • Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl and add the butter, cut into small cubes, mix until it resembles small crumbs. Do not over mix. Add the buttermilk and vanilla. Mix until liquids are incorporated, but again, DO NOT OVER MIX. Stir in the raisins.
  • If you prefer, substitute dried cranberries, dried blueberries, or nuts, or you can also add grated fresh orange or lemon zest. Roll out onto floured surface to a thickness of 1/2 inch. You may cut into shapes, or pat into a circle and cut into wedges. Bake at 350 degrees until golden, about 25-30 minutes.
