Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Method

  • In a large saucepan, melt shortening over low heat.
  • Remove and let cool.
  • Add sugar, molasses and egg.
  • Beat well.
  • Sift together remaining dry ingredients; add to first mixture.
  • Mix well and chill thoroughly (at least 2 hours).
  • Form in 1-inch balls.
  • Roll in additional sugar.
  • Place on greased baking sheets 2-inches apart.
  • Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Makes 4 1/2 dozen.
