Ingredients

  • 5 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 qt. buttermilk
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 5 c. flour
  • 2 c. 40% bran flakes
  • 3 1/2 c. All-Bran
  • dates, raisins and nuts (may be added)

Method

  • Mix soda and boiling water and cool in a large bowl.
  • Add buttermilk.
  • Cream together shortening, sugar, eggs and salt.
  • Add flour alternately with the liquid.
  • Then add cereals and dates, raisins or nuts.
  • Keep batter covered in refrigerator.
  • Bake as needed. Keeps for 3 weeks.
  • Put in muffin tins, greased, 3/4 full. Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.
