Ingredients

  • 1 lb. pinto or pink beans
  • 2 small onions
  • 5 c. water
  • 1/2 c. light spread

Method

  • Place beans and onions in a pan with water.
  • Bring to a boil. Remove from heat; let stand 2 hours, then return to heat and bring to a boil.
  • Simmer for either 3 hours or until beans are tender. At this point, melt light spread.
  • Using a potato masher or fork, start mashing beans, adding light spread slowly and combining until desired consistency.
