Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring (1/4 c.)
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 7 1/2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 c. confectioners sugar

Method

  • Grease and flour pans.
  • Cream together sugar, shortening and eggs.
  • Beat well.
  • Add red food coloring and cocoa.
  • Blend well. Mix together salt, vanilla and buttermilk.
  • Add to the sugar mixture alternately with flour.
  • Mix together soda and vinegar. Fold into batter with as little mixing as necessary to distribute evenly.
  • Bake at 350° for 25 to 35 minutes.
