Ingredients
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. butter flavor
- 1 1/2 oz. bottle red food color
- 3 tsp. cocoa
- 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. soda
Method
- Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors.
- Make paste of cocoa and food colors.
- Add to first mixture, alternately.
- Add flour and buttermilk.
- Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl (will fizz up).
- Add to batter.
- Blend.
- Bake in three 9-inch pans for 20 to 25 minutes at 350°.
- Let cool completely.
- Cover with frosting.
