Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. butter flavor
  • 1 1/2 oz. bottle red food color
  • 3 tsp. cocoa
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. soda

Method

  • Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors.
  • Make paste of cocoa and food colors.
  • Add to first mixture, alternately.
  • Add flour and buttermilk.
  • Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl (will fizz up).
  • Add to batter.
  • Blend.
  • Bake in three 9-inch pans for 20 to 25 minutes at 350°.
  • Let cool completely.
  • Cover with frosting.
