Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 (1 oz.) bottles red food coloring
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 3/4 tsp. salt

Method

  • Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy; add eggs and beat one minute.
  • Put cocoa and food coloring in a cup and make a paste; add to shortening mixture.
  • Add salt to buttermilk and add with flour to the other mixture.
  • Mix well after each addition.
  • Fold in vinegar and soda; mix.
  • Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes in 9-inch pans.
