Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 fluid oz. red cake color
  • 1 oz. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. white vinegar

Method

  • Mix cocoa, red color, water and vanilla.
  • Set aside.
  • Cream shortening and sugar.
  • Add eggs and cocoa mix. Blend.
  • Next add alternately the buttermilk and flour.
  • Last, mix soda and vinegar. Fold into batter lightly.
  • Bake in two 9-inch cake pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
