Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/3 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. canned pumpkin
  • 2/3 c. buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 3/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. ginger

Method

  • Cream the shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Combine the pumpkin and buttermilk or sour milk. Sift together the remaining ingredients. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with pumpkin mixture, beating well after each addition.
  • Bake in greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool and frost.
