Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 2 tsp. Calumet baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. molasses
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves

Method

  • Sift
  • flour
  • once;
  • measure
  • and
  • add baking powder and salt. Sift
  • together
  • times.
  • Cream butter thoroughly; add sugar gradually
  • and
  • cream
  • together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, then flour alternately with milk a small amount at a time. Beat after
  • each addition until smooth. Divide batter into 2
  • parts. To one
  • part add spices and molasses.
  • Put by tablespoon into greased loaf pan, 8 x 4 x 3-inches, alternating light
  • and dark molasses.
  • Bake in moderate oven at 325° for 1
  • hour and 15 minutes. Spread butter frostings on top and sides of cake.
