Ingredients

  • 3-1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • 1 medium red onion, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons canola oil

Method

  • In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the water, broth, 1/4 cup butter and dried minced onion to 120°-130°. Add to dry ingredients; beat just until moistened. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
