Ingredients

  • 1 c. unsifted flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 c. sour milk (2 tsp. vinegar in measuring cup and fill with milk) or 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. very hot water

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Grease an 8-inch square pan or have ready 12 to 18 cupcake liners in cupcake pan.
  • Do not mix until all ingredients are in the bowl. Beat all ingredients until smooth with mixer. Pour into prepared pan or cupcake liners (1/2 full). Bake at 350° about 40 minutes for cake or 15 to 20 minutes for cupcakes. The top gets sticky as it cools.
