Ingredients

  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 12 cup sugar
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 12 cup water, lukewarm
  • 6 cups flour

Method

  • Pour the boiling water over the quick oats, shortening, salt, molasses and 1/2 cup sugar.
  • Let stand until lukewarm.
  • Dissolve yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup lukewarm water and add to oat mixture.
  • Add flour and knead until firm.
  • Let stand until double in size.
  • Form into 2 loaves and let rise again until double in size.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
