Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 c. finely chopped candied fruit
  • 1/2 c. finely chopped nuts
  • 1 c. Karo (blue label)
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten

Method

  • Sift together flour, soda and spices.
  • Stir in candied fruit and nuts.
  • Add Karo, sugar, lemon juice and rind (if desired) to beaten egg; mix well.
  • Stir in flour-fruit mixture.
  • Divide dough in half and turn out on well-greased and floured baking sheets. Moisten hands and flatten to 1/8-inch thickness (dough will rise during baking).
  • Bake in hot oven at 400° for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly brown.
