Ingredients

  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 small can coconut
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 5 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Method

  • Cream margarine and shortening.
  • Add sugar and beat until smooth.
  • Add egg yolks; beat well.
  • Combine flour and soda and add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  • Stir in vanilla. Add coconut and chopped nuts.
  • (I use walnuts or pecans.)
  • Fold in egg whites.
  • Bake in 3 (8-inch) pans greased and floured.
  • Cover with cream cheese frosting.
