Ingredients

  • 4 c. flour (all white) or 3 c. whole meal and 1 white
  • 1 rounded tsp. baking powder
  • 1 rounded tsp. baking soda
  • 1 level tsp. salt
  • 2 oz. margarine
  • buttermilk to make a slack dough

Method

  • Mix all dry ingredients together.
  • Rub in margarine.
  • Add buttermilk and mix to a dough.
  • Place dough on a floured board and knead into a round shape.
  • Place in a greased and floured 9-inch pan.
  • Cut a cross right through the dough.
  • Bake in a 380° oven for 55 minutes or when a skewer comes out clean.
