Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 (3 lb.) chicken, cut up
  • 1 small head cabbage, cut into 1/2-inch slices
  • salt and pepper
  • paprika
  • 2 apples, cored and sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp. grated lemon peel
  • 2 tsp. caraway seed
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. (6 oz.) shredded Swiss cheese

Method

  • Melt butter in a large skillet with cover.
  • Dust chicken with paprika.
  • Brown chicken over medium heat.
  • Place cabbage slices on bottom of a buttered 13 x 9-inch baking dish.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Cover and bake in 375° oven until tender, about 25 minutes.
  • Arrange apple and onion over cabbage.
  • Sprinkle with lemon peel, sugar and caraway seed.
  • Place chicken pieces on top and continue baking 30 minutes or until tender.
  • Remove cover and sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake 5 minutes more until cheese is melted.
