Ingredients
- 2 c. plain meal (white, preferable)
- 1 1/2 c. plain flour
- 2 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/2 to 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1/4 c. vegetable shortening
Method
- Heat shortening in an oblong or square baking pan that bread will be baked in.
- Pour buttermilk into mixing bowl; add meal. Sift the flour, soda and salt into this; add sugar.
- Stir well. Pour about half of hot shortening into batter; continue stirring until well mixed.
- Pour batter into heated pan and cook at 350° to 375° for forty-five minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
