Ingredients

  • 2 c. plain meal (white, preferable)
  • 1 1/2 c. plain flour
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. vegetable shortening

Method

  • Heat shortening in an oblong or square baking pan that bread will be baked in.
  • Pour buttermilk into mixing bowl; add meal. Sift the flour, soda and salt into this; add sugar.
  • Stir well. Pour about half of hot shortening into batter; continue stirring until well mixed.
  • Pour batter into heated pan and cook at 350° to 375° for forty-five minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
