Ingredients

  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 c. lukewarm milk
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 small egg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. melted butter
  • 2 tsp. ground cardamom
  • sugar and chopped almonds as topping

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup milk.
  • Mix remaining milk, sugar, egg, salt, butter and cardamom in a large bowl.
  • Add a small amount of the flour and mix well.
  • Add yeast and remaining flour, beating with a wooden spoon until dough is smooth and firm. Sprinkle dough with a bit of flour; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 2 hours.
  • Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
  • Preheat oven to 375°.
