Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. water
  • 3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper

Method

  • Beat butter in large bowl at medium speed of electric mixer; gradually add sugar, beating well.
  • Add molasses; beat well. Combine soda and water, stirring until soda dissolves.
  • Add to creamed mixture.
  • Combine flour and remaining ingredients; add to creamed mixture, mixing well.
  • Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheets and flatten slightly with a flat bottomed glass dipped in flour.
  • Bake at 350° for 9 to 10 minutes or until done.
  • Cool slightly on cookie sheet; remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Yields 8 dozen.
