Ingredients

  • 1/3 c. soft shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 small egg
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Method

  • Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, molasses and water thoroughly. Sift dry ingredients together and stir in.
  • Chill dough.
  • Heat oven to 400° (moderate heat).
  • Drop dough by teaspoons about 2 inches apart onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Cookies will spread slightly during baking.
  • Bake about 8 minutes or until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly.
  • Makes about 4 dozen 2-inch cookies.
