Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/4 c. sugar (white)
  • 3/4 c. light brown sugar
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 egg yolk (reserve white)
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. powdered cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. chopped pecans

Method

  • Stir baking soda into buttermilk.
  • Cream shortening.
  • Add sugars.
  • Cream together; beat in eggs.
  • Alternately add buttermilk (with added soda) and flour.
  • Add nuts, vanilla and cinnamon. Spread in greased oblong baking dish.
  • Prepare topping.
  • Place topping on batter before baking.
  • Bake slowly in 300° oven until done.
  • Cut into squares.
