Ingredients

  • 2 2/3 packages yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 quart milk, scalded
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 6 teaspoons salt
  • 7-9 cups flour
  • shortening for frying

Method

  • Add yeast to warm water to dissolve.
  • Combine milk, sugar, shortening and salt; add yeast.
  • Gradually add flour until a round ball forms.
  • May be beaten in mixer with dough hook attachment. Cover with cloth and let dough rise until double.
  • Drop from tablespoon into melted shortening and fry like doughnuts until golden brown.
  • Serve with preserves, apple butter, honey, or syrup. Yields 7 dozen biscuits.
