Ingredients

  • Pudding:
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 5 Tbsp. melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Sauce:
  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 3/4 cup dark Karo syrup
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon soda in 1 cup of hot water. Pour over 1 cup chopped dates and let cool.
  • To 1 cup sugar and 5 tablespoons of melted butter, add one beaten egg, the dates, and 1 cup of chopped nuts. Add 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. (editors note: I think I add the flour and vanilla to the sugar, butter and egg and then add dates and nuts). Mix lumpily (also editor's note).
  • Bake in greased pan for 30 minutes at 350.
  • Sauce:
  • Combine 4 tablespoons butter, 3/4 cup dark karo syrup, and 1 1/2 cup brown sugar in a saucepan.
  • Cook mixture to soft ball stage and let cool. Then add 1 cup carnation canned milk.
  • Serve pudding warm with warm sauce spooned over it.
