Ingredients

  • 4 or 5 large white onions, peeled
  • butter
  • salt and pepper
  • 1/2 pt. light cream
  • 1/2 pt. heavy cream
  • Italian bread crumbs

Method

  • Slice enough onions in 1/4-inch slices to fill a medium size greased casserole.
  • Layer onion slices in casserole.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste and dot generously with butter.
  • Pour heavy cream and light cream over top of onions but do not cover. Cover with generous layer of Italian bread crumbs.
  • (This can be made a day ahead, up to this point.)
  • Place casserole on baking sheet and bake in 300° oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
  • Onion-lovers will want seconds!
