Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 2/3 c. orange juice
  • 3/4 c. powdered sugar
  • 1/4 c. cocoa
  • 3/4 c. + 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. grated orange peel
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 3 Tbsp. melted butter

Method

  • Combine
  • flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in mixing bowl. Cut
  • in
  • shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse
  • crumbs.
  • Add
  • eggs,
  • orange juice and peel; stir
  • just until blended.
  • Set batter aside.
  • Combine powdered sugar, nuts and cocoa in a small bowl. Stir in melted butter to
  • form a crumb
  • mixture.
  • Spread
  • 3/4
  • cup reserved batter evenly on bottom
  • of a greased 8-inch pan.
  • Sprinkle half of crumb
  • mixture over
  • batter.
  • Spread
  • with one cup batter and sprinkle
  • with remaining crumb mixture.
  • Cover with remaining batter.
  • Bake
  • at 350°
  • for
  • 35
  • to
  • 40 minutes or until cake tester inserted
  • in center
  • comes out clean.
  • Cool slightly; spread with Orange Glaze. serve warm.
