Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. milk, scalded
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 5 3/4 to 6 1/4 c. sifted flour

Method

  • Soften dry yeast in warm water (110°).
  • Combine hot milk, sugar, salt and shortening.
  • Cool to lukewarm.
  • Stir in 2 cups flour; beat well. Add softened yeast; mix.
  • Add enough remaining flour to make moderately stiff dough. Turn out on lightly floured surface.
  • Knead about 5 minutes. Shape in ball and place in lightly greased bowl, turning once. Cover and let rise in warm place (about 1 1/4 hours).
  • Punch down.
