Ingredients

  • 8 oz. pkg. dates, cut up
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. margarine
  • 2 eggs, creamed
  • salt
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Method

  • Combine dates, boiling water and soda.
  • Let soak.
  • Combine sugar, margarine and eggs in mixer and blend well.
  • Drain liquid off dates and add liquid to sugar and egg mixture, alternating with flour and salt.
  • Stir dates in last.
  • Pour in 9 x 13 x 2-inch greased pan.
  • Sprinkle chocolate chips and chopped nuts over batter followed by a sprinkling of granulated sugar.
  • Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350°.
  • Cut in small squares or cut larger squares and top with ice cream or Cool Whip.
