Ingredients

  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 30 vanilla caramels
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 c. coarsely chopped peanuts

Method

  • Melt 1 cup chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon shortening in double boiler over hot water; blend well.
  • Spread in foil-lined 8-inch square dish.
  • Chill until firm.
  • Melt caramels with butter and 2 tablespoons water in double boiler over hot water.
  • Stir in peanuts.
  • Spread over chocolate layer.
  • Chill for 15 minutes or until partially set.
  • Melt remaining 1 cup chocolate and 1 tablespoon shortening in double boiler over hot water.
  • Spread over caramel layer.
  • Chill until firm.
  • Cut into 1 x 2-inch bars. Store, covered, in refrigerator.
  • Yield: 1 1/2 pounds.
