Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. cocoa
  • 1 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 1/4 c. scalded milk
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs, unbeaten
  • 1 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. sifted flour

Method

  • Sift cocoa with 1/3 cup sugar.
  • Add scalded milk gradually and stir until smooth.
  • Cool.
  • Combine shortening, salt and vanilla. Add 1 cup sugar gradually and cream thoroughly.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.
  • Add soda to flour and sift three times.
  • Add flour to creamed mixture, mixing after each addition until smooth.
  • Pour into two 9-inch layer pans that have been greased and floured.
  • Bake at 350° for 25 minutes.
