Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. ground chuck
  • 1 (5 1/3 oz.) can evaporated milk
  • 1/2 c. cracker crumbs
  • 1 c. (4 oz.) shredded American cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 c. chopped onion
  • 1/4 c. chopped green pepper
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. dried basil leaves
  • 2 slices American cheese

Method

  • Combine all
  • ingredients,
  • except
  • cheese
  • slices
  • in a large mixing
  • bowl and mix lightly.
  • Place mixture in an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x
  • 5/8-inch
  • loaf pan. Shape into a loaf.
  • Bake at 375° for 1 hour.
  • Remove loaf from oven. Cut each cheese slice into 2 triangles
  • and
  • arrange
  • overlapping
  • on
  • top of loaf. Return meat loaf to oven 2 minutes or until cheese melts.
  • Let stand 10 minutes before slicing.
  • Yields 6 to 8 servings.
