Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon bacon fat or vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch dice
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon malt vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 teaspoons Creole mustard
  • 1 teaspoon hot red pepper sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste

Method

  • Heat the fat or oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
  • Simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Keep warm until ready to serve.
