Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 c. mashed bananas (about 2)
  • 3 Tbsp. sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts

Method

  • Mix together the shortening and sugar.
  • Beat in egg thoroughly.
  • Stir in bananas and sour milk or buttermilk.
  • (To sour milk, add 1 teaspoon vinegar.)
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and chopped nuts.
  • Stir in flour mixture with rest of ingredients.
  • Line a greased 5 x 10 x 13-inch bread pan with 2 thicknesses of plain paper.
  • Grease the paper.
  • Pour in batter.
  • Bake 1 hour at 350°.
