Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 large apples
  • 1 1/2 to 2 c. water
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 3/4 c. sugar, mixed with 1 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 c. syrup from apple peels plus 2 Tbsp. sugar

Method

  • Pare and core apples, saving skins and core and simmer in water.
  • Drain and reserve liquid from syrup.
  • Sift dry ingredients together.
  • Cut in shortening.
  • Add milk; stir only until moistened.
  • Roll out to size of tea towel; cut into 6 or 8 squares.
  • Put apples on each square of dough.
  • Put 1 teaspoon butter, 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon mixture in each apple. Pinch dough together over apple.
