Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. Crisco
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Sift dry ingredients together; cut in shortening with pastry blender.
  • Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
  • Add alternately with buttermilk to dry ingredients; mix well.
  • Roll out 1/4-inch thick on floured board; cut with biscuit cutter.
  • Dip on one side in melted butter.
  • Fold in half and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake immediately, or keep covered in refrigerator and bake as needed.
  • Bake at 400° for 15 minutes.
  • Yields 4 dozen.
