Ingredients

  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water (105~ to 115~)
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt; cut in shortening.
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water; stir into buttermilk. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients and stir until moistened.
  • Cover and chill.
  • When ready to use, roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/2 to 3/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut out biscuits with 2-inch cutter and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 400° for 12 minutes.
  • Dough will keep several weeks in the refrigerator.
  • Yield:
  • 4 to 5 dozen (2-inch) biscuits.
