Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast (4 oz. each)
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. buttermilk, warmed to 110~
  • 5 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. shortening, butter or margarine

Method

  • Add warm water and warmed buttermilk to yeast.
  • Blend flour, baking powder, soda, sugar and salt.
  • Add shortening, butter or margarine; add to flour mixture.
  • Cut into coarse meal, use pastry blender (or 2 knives).
  • Stir in buttermilk and yeast.
  • Turn onto floured board and knead lightly.
  • Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Cut into circles with floured glass or biscuit cutter.
  • Place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  • Let rise 1 1/2 hours.
  • Bake at 450° for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Brush with melted butter.
