Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. vegetable shortening
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Sift dry ingredients together.
  • Cut in shortening.
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water; mix with buttermilk (room temperature).
  • Add mixture to dry ingredients and mix well.
  • Roll out 1/4-inch thick.
  • Cut with round biscuit cutter or juice glass.
  • Dip in melted butter or margarine and let rise 1 hour.
  • Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 400° for about 15 minutes or until done.
  • Makes 2 to 3 dozen.
