Ingredients

  • whole, clean cucumbers
  • 2 c. salt
  • alum
  • 2 c. vinegar to 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. cloves
  • about 5 lb. sugar to each gal.

Method

  • Fill glass gallon jar with whole clean cucumbers.
  • Dissolve salt in warm water; pour over cucumbers.
  • Let it stand 24 hours. Pour off brine.
  • Dissolve 3/4 alum in hot water.
  • Pour over cucumbers.
  • Let it stand 24 hours.
  • Pour off brine.
  • Put cucumbers in clear water for 24 hours.
  • Boil vinegar and water with cloves for 20 minutes.
  • Tie cloves in bag while boiling.
  • Pour this mixture in over cucumbers.
  • Let it stand 24 hours.
  • Pour off vinegar.
  • Rinse cukes.
  • Put layer of sugar in jar.
  • Slice cukes in 1 layer, then put sugar, then cukes.
