Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter (no substitute)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 heaping tsp. cocoa
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3 (1/2 oz. size) bottles red food coloring
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda

Method

  • Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time. Mix well. Make a thin paste of the cocoa and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt together. Add flour mixture and buttermilk to creamed mixture, one tablespoon at a time, beginning and ending with flour.
  • Mix soda and vinegar. Blend into mixture last.
  • Grease and flour three 8-inch pans.
  • Bake in preheated oven at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove and cool.
