- 3 Tbsp. cocoa
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 1 1/2 c. white sugar
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 c. sifted cake flour or 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. vinegar
Method
- Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring and mix well.
- Set aside.
- Cream the sugar and shortening.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well.
- Add vanilla and the red paste.
- Mix well.
- Add flour and buttermilk.
- Dissolve baking soda in vinegar and add to batter.
- Mix well and pour into two round cake pans.
- Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
