Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 lb. ground pork
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 c. rice, washed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 Tbsp. fat
  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 1 small can tomato puree
  • 1 clove garlic

Method

  • Saute chopped onion in fat.
  • Add to meat which has been placed in mixing bowl.
  • Add egg, seasoning and washed rice; mix well. Set meat mixture aside while preparing cabbage.
  • Slice cabbage into slivers or wedges of approximately 1/2 to 1-inch.
  • Remove any pieces of hard vein from cut pieces.
  • Place 1/2 of cabbage in large pot.
  • Form meat into approximately 8 balls of equal size. Place on top of cabbage in pot and cover with remaining cabbage. Pour tomato puree over cabbage and add water to cover.
  • Cook over low heat for at least 1 hour.
